Link Love or Lust? You decide…
Nov 17th, 2007 by Felix Alaita
Is it love of lust?
I’d call it Lust cause love is deeper than the superficial drive for linkbacks we need and seek with zeal. In my stumblings across the www, I’ve come to see several names attributed to offers for linkbacks. From direct requests from the likes of Makoy which I found fascinating, would probably try myself and of course joined to the more subtle style of webd360 which I joined again with NO REGRETS. Baka Konenko was my first experience with the Top Commentator Plugin. I’ve seen a couple of names on the blogroll, I hope I get there sometime. The linkback just came in naturaly plus both of them brought me my first reactions on Technorati.
Green Fever
Being a newbie blogger has a lot of frustrating moments am sure most of us experienced. Imagine your first 20 post without a comment or having to beg your family and friends to take a look at your genius and please leave a comment. In searching for a solution, I got my first link love linkback and it wasn’t lust, which came in the form of freeectasy. I was taken aback cause I was still green and new to ectasy. Fortunately the addiction was not detrimental to my state of being, my blog was picked up by Alexa and a rank awarded. MEMEs which I thought was a french word, I first encountered in Bola’s beautifully designed blog.
In decision…
Before I decided to place an announcement for 1 comment for 2 links on my front page I had been pondering how to drive traffic to my blog and leave comments when they do come. I got BlogRush installed and traffic started trickling in. Then I came across Mybloglog and things took a different turn I stumbled upon my two friends Jamaipanese and Jamaicandawta, bless their soul, who would leave a comment on your blog once you’ve done same in theirs. If you love witty posts with a Jamaican flair (da beautiful lang), don’t hesitate to stop by cause you’d be rewarded in kind. Refinedone drew a tear to my eye on her post about motherhood, I can’t lie. If you’ve got a mom (don’t we all?), you’d probably want to give it a read and please don’t laugh at my comments there, I’ve said my piece. Next came Oladapo MD (does MD stand for a doctor or what?). He was quite honest at his lack of understanding of poetry - I liked that and his site is a blast. Omodudu whose blog I found through my subscription to google blog alerts is a cute faced Nigerian guy with a fiery blog. Looking at his profile, you’d think he couldn’t hurt a fly, brotherman, he spits venom when civil rights and bad governance are on fire.
Link Love Growth…
Linklove.net simply tells you “if you want to become blog of the weekend, then just add the html code sent to you in your email”. But while I was pondering what where or how, woobie the gamerchick simply prescribed “let your blog evolve into something that reflects your personality”. Deep! if you ask me. I write poetry in rhythmic burst, stories but not for blogs and been said to be motivational in advice. So I tried to apply it here on my blog. Rawdawgbufalo has a style of expression I find unique. He like I, never believed in perfection stating “such if exist only exist for a moment.” Jason came in last with his Xaphid (what is that?). Right before the idea came to me to offer 2 free links for 1 comment on my front page. But before I could make the announcement, Balidream left me a comment that touched my whole. He agreed totally with my idea that perfection is not required to be a blogger. LaurGrob told me to just ”stay real and be yourself…no one wants to read something fake and overly produced…” How apt! Michael summed that with”If my blog isn’t perfect, then so be it. I’m just having fun writing what I feel like and building a network of friends and contacts in the process.” The moral of the story is my long search for interaction on my blog had commenced and I didn’t even know it. I was no longer looking for friends to leave comments.
The “2 free links for 1 comment on my front page” offer
I made the announcement. No longer green, maybe a little brown but discovering my voice all the same. I’d barely finished posting when first in line from my ad on mybloglog, was Doug McCaughan who simply said it was a “good deal indeed!”. Sparx came in through BlogRush and apparently didnt visit the front page so I asked him if the offer wasn’t enticing enough. In response he informed me of his liking of my Chronicles of a Million Eyes Project. Eric was 3rd and simply said “Nice linkbait m8…” and offered a “pagerank2 linkback” from his blog in return for my comment. Hey, I took it for sure. Are you still here? Good let me finish my story. The million dollar blog won my heart. His style is so easy I was wondering if one could get two links in
.
The Top Commentator Plugin
This was the advice I got from Debo Hobo. Apparently had that installed on the blog rewarding top commentators monthly. I made a note to look into that. Merlyndia who left me spellbound at her beauty on her blog, left a comment on Sussie Eyes signing of with peace, love and blessings which I found touching.Michael of Parosparadise came next telling me I’d put together a great blog and he’d surely be back. He has some lovely pics there by the way. I think you should check it out. Note that from announcement till now we were still in Day 1. The comments were coming in … Rounding off the day was Lyn with comments on Sussie’ Eyes once more. She thought “it’s bittersweet and rings of knowledge and wisdom, and it does apply to many…” I couldn’t agree more. Summary of the day for those who want to know….From my monthly average of 8 to 10 visitor per day, I’d racked up 55 visitors in one day. Not bad for a newbie huh?
Day 2 to End
The next day I learnt an important truth about the online community. Hot news today is stale news tomorrow. My visits for day 2 dropped to 23 with only one comment coming in from Wil with an enthusiatic “Hell yeah! I’m gonna bookmark your site right now. And don’t forget to show me some love with those 2 links”. The Nigerian Student was all I got on day 3 and he seem glad he came in right on time, though he acknowledged not knowing anything about poetry but I guess he’s an expert on scholarships. Yesterday was Day 4, the last day of the offer. Joe of Linkbaitme left me a rather long comment that lifted up my spirit. He’s offering $200 if you join his community on mybloglog by the way. Have you joined? I have
. Then Jim rounded off the offer with his comment stating that my blog was so well written and worth reading. Did I mention he offered me a pint if Iever found myself in Dublin. Fascinating. Guess I’d be taking him up on his offer pretty soon.
News Flash!
Just as I was about to hit the publish button, Emmanuelle dropped a comment on Susie’s Eyes. Since the offer closed yesterday, I decided to grace her with this link. Her site is pretty nice, I love the hues of blue, really cool design.
The Sum Up
In summary, I ran a FREE Advert on mybloglog offering 2 free links for 1 comment lasting four days (Didn’t really want to get too many now did I?). I got a total of about 113 visitors and 12 comments. In my view, I think I did well for starters. I definetely learnt alot and found some new blogs worth visiting regularly. I guess my next offer would be more rewarding to me and my visitors as I get more vested in this blogging business. I sincerely hope I haven’t kept you bored with my ramblings (this is by far my longest post ever and you wouldn’t be reading this if you were bored of course). Hopefully you’ve also learnt something too. If you didn’t get to have a free link this time not to worry, just keep visiting, another surprise is on its way.
Thanks for sparing your time and please let me know what you think…(There just might be a reward). Linkbacks, trackbacks or whatever would be appreciated.

They say black men don’t blush, they lie. Wow a load of resources you have put together there. But isn’t google purnishing now? Not very good with SEO stuff. I thought I was the only one subscribed to google blogs search Nigeria. loL
Amazingly witty artcile, and Thank you for the linkback. The top commentator plugin is really quite simple to install. You can retrieve it from WordPress download it to your server, activate the plugin and install it in your sidebar template.
Hope everyone takes the time to thank you for the linkbacks you have provided.
I wanted to say more but was on a project deadline. Thanks and glad you are pleased with the results.
This is a great article, I actually got here from technorati, thanks for the mention and link up there, you’re very generous.
Nice article m8!
Thx for mentioning me. I looked in my Technorati profile and saw my authority raised. Then I’ve seen you’r one of the reasons behind this.
PS, nice to see you got the BlogRush widget moved to the sidebar now. An improvement indeed!
Good luck!
It was only on my third month of blogging that I realized how important links are to rank, and a few more weeks after that, I finally realized what “rank” actually is. Links start out as “loves” during the early stages of blogging when we’re just starting to make friends over the net… then we realize that we need more links to rank high and so we eventually “lust” for them.
Rank doesn’t drive a blog, content does. And I came back to this blog because of exactly that… your content. More power!!!
It is essential to give out link love in order to get some back.. Buying and selling links may not be good anymore, but sincere link love isn’t and I plan to do that!
Seems I missed my opportunity for the comment equals two front page links promo but I am glad I found your blog anyway. I like how you made the summation of your linklove project so entertaining
Very good writing that will keep me coming back for more.
Hey Tony thanks for the compliment, and see you around.
Love your site and I will be back again for more wonderful reading. Thank you.
